I Found Something At The Gym Today

I found something at the gym tonight. Tonight I had every intention of going into further detail on my post yesterday about my New Year's Resolutions 2.0 but something happened at the gym tonight that was surprising. It might have never happened because I wasn't even supposed to go to the gym tonight but my alarm for some reason didn't go off this morning. So I went to the gym tonight after work and it was insanely crowded with all the New Years Resolution Newbies. I started at the Leg Press machine and that is when it happened.

"Can I get in on this with you?" That is what a young college buck said to me as I put the plates on the Leg Press machine. Since I'm not a jerk I said yes and that is when it started. I don't know if you call it competitive juices or finding another gear but my workout intensity shot through the roof.  We each rested just long enough for the other guy to finish a set and then we'd throw on one more 45 pound plate on each side. Normally I might do 4 sets and finish with about 450 lbs of weight on the machine. Today I was so cranked up my last set was 630 pounds for 5 reps. We finished up and went our separate ways but for the rest of my workout I was on a high and did more weight and more sets than I normally do.

What did I learn? A training partner seems to work for me. That person standing there waiting for their turn apparently makes me find a gear I didn't know I even have. The only person I know that wants to start going to the gym is my wife. I'm not sure if that will have the same effect since there won't be that same "anything you can do I can do better" mentality. I'm not going to discount it though until we give it a shot. We'll see what she says.

PS-Can the gyms be any more packed right now?

  1. Nothing like a little friendly competition! I think training partners can be very, very helpful.
